Things You Need to Remeber

Several things I think I need to remeber during incoming internship.

Communication: ask stupid questions

Communication is the first thing and foremost. Not only report progress on your project, but also ask teammates, mentor, even manager techique questions if you are stuck. No one expect you to know everything as a intern. And it’s hard to find answer on Internet when you need to build a feature for billions of users. Ask dumb question doesn’t makes you dumb, be silent is the dumbest part.

This is really the part I am not good at. In previous internship, I would rather spend hours on searching in official doc than ask my mentor. But my reason is not preventing act like stupid, I just don’t want to waste their time to answer my question if I can find answer on Internet. Anyway, if they have prepare time for me to ask question. There’s no reason to let them to use this part of time to watching news or relax.

Relax: don’t put too much pressure on yourself

Internship is not a 8 weeks interview. No one want to judge you during such a long process. It’s not only for you to get a future work opportunity, but also decent compensation, build connection with professionals, study technology from tech gaints. Enjoy the whole process.

And a YouTuber said, “Most of preparation video on YouTube is garbage, include this one. You could never be well-prepared. Instaead of studying all day before internship launch day, just relax yourself and have fun when your semester is finished and internship doesn’t start.”

Make note on how to setting developement environment

Setting process is also annoying. I keep that!

Don’t Think That You Have To Work If There Isn’t Work To Be Done

Don’t overwork yourself. I specially have this tendency when I have my SONY internship. At that time, I have only one week to finish my project. And I still consider add as many new features as I can even I finish my presentation slide. No need to be so hard working.

It’s Okay To Make A Mistake, Just Get Help Right Away

Submit incorrect code review or commit wrong code or no code at all is very embarrased as SDE. Every member in team will know you make mistakes when this happen.

A mistake always remians mistake if you don’t learn from it. The best way to learn from mistake is reaching out to senior coworks.
